looking back at the week it seems kind of unreal that i was able to find time to read so much theory, taking into consideration the amount time i spend doing other arb activities.
but somehow i ended up reading about 1500 pages in total, taking into account lord of the rings is 1008 pages (yes i googled it).
before writing and visual methodologies were so rad! i actually want to buy me VM ( i just need to get an edition with a less lame cover). It’s basically a semi-detailed overview of predominantly semiology and psychoanalytics. before writing was, really not that relevant to my research but i had so much fun reading it, it mainly dealt with social semiotics and production/consumption of meaning in pre-literate children.
semiotics: the basics was okayish, but turned out to be anything but basic, touching on concepts regarding reality and idealism, which kind of caught me off guard.
media in question was okayish as well, although it’s looks more like a sci-fi novel than social sciences theory book. see this is the type of book i would put at the bottom when I'm reading in public – while i would put Agency and Consciousness in Discource: Self-Other Dynamics as a Complex System at the top.
I wasn’t serious though. I detest it when theory intentionally tries to elevate itself intellectually, either through jargons or presentation.
on that note the last two books were really awful, i didn’t even finish them.
I have to end this with one of the images sourced in before writing i couldn't help but smile every time it was referenced. (just for some context - it’s a children’s drawing imitating a fictional newspaper story)
it reads ‘In John Prince’s Street someone got dead’ :)
Much to my suprise, finished two theory books today.
LaLiSP, blue one, was okayish, Textual Politics, green one, was so rad! I ended up reading the entire book, even the parts that didn’t relate to my theory.
I’m busy with Social Semiotics until Monday, then from Tuesday to Thursday it’s party time with Bakthin. I should be more or less sorted in regards to my theme/approach next week.
Took a photo of my sink for on Monday for Corlia Harmsen’s collective art project.
